Thomas Edison Patents the Phonograph (1878)

Facts

Item: Thomas Edison Patents the Phonograph (1878)

#107

0
Event Though his formal schooling was limited to just three months of instruction before he was ten years old, Edison was one of the most prolific inventors of his time. His work in improving telegraph technology—particularly his discovery of a method for recording telegraph messages—led Edison to suspect he could do similar things with sound. Within months, the first working model of his phonograph was ready. Why, according to Edison, was he "taken aback" when his invention worked on the first try?

Not Mr Perfect by any means, but I can't disagree with that... he was also the most vocal opponent of appeasement in the 1930s, warning largely deaf ears of the growing threat from the national socialism movement in continental Europe.

Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, FDR & Mao - all astonishing men in astonishing times but for me, it's Churchill who is the Man of the 20th Century.
He was warning FDR about Stalin's Iron Curtain intentions for several years before the phrase was coined and wanted - I gather - to attack the Russians and drive them out of Western Europe but FDR would have none of it.
