Nice post.. a great call to others to contribute unselfishly to their community, which is a worthwhile endeavour... however, I'd like to have seen you explore the human motivation for altruism further. What about examining the argument that ALL human actions are driven by a neural 'reward mechanism', and are therefore ultimately selfish..... just a thought ;-)

It's your many enemies that have given you the skills to be able to listen to SC without damaging nearby ornaments...

I would agree with the empathy bit. But yeah, no point to needlessly suffer ;)

Whoops! I'm disagreeing with the Dalai Lama, again!

[If] suffering awakens our empathy and causes us to connect with others...it [may] serve as the basis of compassion and love.

Does it?

So true, so true.....a little reminder to some occasionally would make the world a better place.

If everyone did a little bit of this the world would be a better place....

I think that distribution of free gingernuts would help as well ......

The Dalai Lama has a great sense of humour - you can tell that by the way he wears dresses ......

Undeniably true, but not really earth-shattering insight either. If your life isn't perfect you may have to reevaluate. Huh.

"underlying nature of human beings is gentleness." - I'm guessing that HHDL has not spent much time working in an investment bank trading room.
