Winnie the Pooh!
Pooh! A bear of very little brain ... lovable, lovable Pooh! Heffalumps and woozles, the songs of Pooh - When it goes, tiddly pom, when it goes, tiddly pom, when it goes tiddly pom on snowing. My toes, tiddly pom, my toes etc.etc. The first sign of a snowflake and off we would go. Kanga and Roo, Owl, wonderful, wonderful Owl. Always a joy to read and just as much fun to read to the children. Sometimes I wondered when I read them to sleep whether the book I had chosen was for them or for me! Probably a bit of both!

A brilliant perspective on evolution, and explanation of our position in the animal kingdom.

Ooh.. I'm rather partial to a bit of HBC... is she on the hotties list?

I'm holding back on my comments as I haven't quite finished yet.....but I can't say it's a page turner......

Yes, it is widely considered the worst film ever made - for all the reasons I gave for liking it.

The movie starred a late 1960s Michael Caine and it is truly awful!

Yeah, I thought The Hobbit was a much easier read, and didn't take itself quite so seriously. LOTR really drags its feet in parts.
DJ 08:16:31 | 6 Nov 2010
oooh, sounds intruiging.......Did they make a film?
Sparkly Aph 08:16:06 | 6 Nov 2010
Wierd but definitely stuck in my mind, only seen the film....should probably read the book sometime....
Sparkly Aph 08:14:31 | 6 Nov 2010
Captivating and incisive - absolutely brilliant.
DJ 08:13:06 | 6 Nov 2010
I've never read it........I quite fancy it though

Alas, The Magus' time may have gone.

Spoiler:

To get it, you must understand the concept of Shame - something that I fear may have been lost.

This scared the willies out of me as a kid!
DJ 08:06:20 | 6 Nov 2010
I remember being struck by this at school and it seemed to resonate against the cold war backdrop. Definitely an all time great and should be in the top 5 at least!

Ooh.. I like weird, so will follow your and D.P.s recommendation. Another one for the list!

I've still not gotten around to reading this... think it'll go on the xmas list!

Holden Caulfield - a hero to 65 million readers and counting. Awesomely awesome!
andrewgoulding 01:48:14 | 6 Nov 2010
Now you're talking! The Magus is pompous, self-important, self-indulgent, trippy, sexy, clever, psychedelic and a genuine page turner.

No wonder I loved it as a youngster!
andrewgoulding 01:45:28 | 6 Nov 2010
"Feelgood" it ain't but in my mind, arguably the greatest novel of the 20th Century.
andrewgoulding 01:42:04 | 6 Nov 2010
The tragedy of Wind In the Willows is that the characters were so lovable that few value Grahame's intent of social criticism.
andrewgoulding 01:40:14 | 6 Nov 2010
Certainly one of the great anti-utopian novels.

'Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!'
andrewgoulding 01:37:47 | 6 Nov 2010
Orwell nailed it with Animal Farm - still an excellent criticism of totalitarianism.
andrewgoulding 01:32:33 | 6 Nov 2010
I found LOTR embarrassingly dull writing with a great story and wonderful characters.

The movies were so much better!

I will keep a copy ready for when I win bigtime.

To review this book I would have to read it again, but as in all of Steinbeck's works life is harsh. Know thy place!

Have another read ..... you can still read I suppose? [hedgehogs reading!!!?! ..... funny old world]
