| Introduction | |
|
|
In the beginning was the word, and the word was an Item, and it was good. And the creator of the Item rested, for it had been a mighty task.
And lo! After a time, another item appeared, and another, and yet another, until many items were present.
Then they took up said items, and placed them in a List. Thus, the List contained many Items, and they were satisfied for that time.
And it came to pass that they didn't like the order of the items in that list, and so a great reordering of items was undertaken, and items were moved up and down in the list, depending upon whether favour had been bestowed on them or no…

| What is The Top 100? | |
|
The Top 100 is a place where you can find The Top 100 list of anything (and if you can’t, you can start your own!).
The Top 100 is all about collaboration and collective opinion, aimed at finding the best of anything.
Items in The Top 100 lists are all ranked according to peoples’ opinions, so that fresh, interesting stuff rises to the top of lists, while older, less popular things fade away – all in real time.
There are zones for each area of interest; there are groups and social-networking for discussing and developing ideas; and you have a personal area – My Top 100 – to help you keep organised.
Everything, ordered into lists of The Top 100..., ranked by you, up to date, all of the time. We call it 'dynamic democracy', and we aim to be a perpetual barometer of mass opinion.
TheTop100.net. It's what you think.TM

| Where do all the lists come from? | |
|
You... us, everyone!
The Top 100 resource is designed from the outset to be user-generated.
The system provides the framework to create and build items in lists, information about those items, the lists themselves, the rating characteristics, the sub-list filters... everything can be created wiki-fashion.
Voters can start new lists, share and merge with others, form groups with fellow enthusiasts to pool ideas, and submit those ideas for others to judge on their merits. The most popular ideas then become new "global lists."
------
Apart from the fact that it appears in the List pages in Zones, you can tell a global list by its name.
When you first create a personal list, it has the prefix 'My Top 100...' and other people's lists will have their name at the front, such as 'Dennis' Top 100 Anteaters'
It's only when a list in the New Ideas section has proven popular enough to be accepted as a global list that it becomes the definitive 'The Top 100...'
There's no limit to how many global lists there can be - their creation will stop when people run out of ideas....

| The Top 100 Team | |
|
Co-founders Dan & Neil met while studying Business Computing Systems at The City University, London, in the days before the world had a web. They had the idea for The Top 100 so long ago, they’ve forgotten who came up with it in the first place, although secretly they both claim personal credit. And blame.
After a lot of thinking, some hard work, some more thinking, some light work, a bit more thinking and then lots of really hard work they came up with a working title: “Project Dennis.” You can see what D.e.n.n.i.s. might stand for here.
